Why proprietary players exist
Evidence platforms wrap video in proprietary containers for chain-of-custody and audit purposes on the agency side, and those wrappers sometimes ship with a bundled player that runs only on Windows. That design serves the agency’s recordkeeping, not your review. As defense counsel you are entitled to usable evidence; if a production plays only in a bespoke player, request the standard MP4 export, which both platforms natively generate, and document the request in case the dispute ever matters.

- Files ending in .mp4 or .mov will play nearly anywhere, including directly in a browser.
